The following will only give you a brief overview of this vast subject but we hope it will convince you of the extraordinary power of essential oils and will incite you to read more about this fascinating subject. In the page "ALL OUR ESSENTIAL OILS", we present in more detail all the essential oils used in our products and their most notable properties.

We have listed in the following table the main properties of essential oils, each time with a few examples of essential oils having this property and the main potential applications for horses. Please note that some of the oils mentioned require precautions for use (dosage/dilution, routes of administration to avoid/favour, contraindications for gestating mares or foals, risks of photosensitization, risks of allergies, etc). We thus recommend that you always get advice from a qualified aromatherapist before using essential oils or that you use ready-made products such as ours.

Essential oils have many other properties such as for example insect-repellent, antipruriginous, anti-dandruff, draining (in particular for the liver and kidneys), digestive (facilitation of the intestinal transit, reduction of intestinal gas, liver stimulation), tonifying and energising properties.

Essentials oils also have an effect on the psyche through olfaction. Some of them will for example be helpful for fearful, anxious or irritable horses, for over-excited stallions, to help regulate heats of a mare or to facilitate weaning of a foal. Other essential oils will help improve certain behaviour problems like tics.

While it appears clearly that essential oils can be very beneficial to improve the health and well being of horses, we must emphasize once again that these substances are extremely powerful and that they may potentially be harmful if used ill-advisedly and without in-depth knowledge. While it is perfectly possible to safely use certain essential oils to remedy minor ailments of the horse, any intention to treat a more serious condition with essential oils will require the intervention of a qualified aromatherapist acting in association with a veterinarian. Essential oils nevertheless remain a wonderful tool to help prevent illnesses and stimulate the body’s self-healing capabilities.
